Current Analysis
The ocean is constantly moving and how the water moves can influence climate and living conditions for plants and animals. The movement of the ocean also has an effect on the stability and longevity of man made items and understanding these currents can lead to better engineering solutions. Increasingly TerraSond is being asked to measure currents in both rivers and oceans to quantify the energy that could be available for renewable power systems.
TerraSond collects data for ocean and river current observations with an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) and collects discharge measurements, both continuous and sectional. The Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) is used for oceanography, estuary, river and stream flow current measurement, and weather forecasting.
TerraSond uses ADCPs mounted on boats for instantaneous surveys in the ocean or rivers and mounted on the sea or river bed for long-term studies. We also use them to locate eddy's that could impact oil drilling activities.

- Kivalina Village Relocation
- Kivalina, Alaska
- We were contracted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) - Alaska District to provide surveying services for the relocation of the village of Kivalina, Alaska. Services included aerial photography, topographic and hydrographic surveys, and support for field measurements of the existing town-site. The resulting services produced a storm surge analysis for possible relocation of the village.

- Conceptual Engineering Services

- We participated in a road design and construction plan for a bridge across Knik Arm, a branch of Cook Inlet near Anchorage, Alaska. Our office staff collected background information about land and sub-sea contours, inlet currents and ice, area biology and regulatory requirements to provide to its client.

- Surveys in Support of Mine Development

- Our surveyors used Static GPS to standardize project control on over 4,500 square miles of remote Alaska to support the development of a mineral mining operation. This project required a variety of surveying capabilities and technologies.

- Hydroelectric Turbine Sites for Alternative Energy Project
- Yukon River, Alaska
- Our hydrographers conducted a reconnaissance of the Yukon River in Alaska to identify a safe and potentially productive installation site for a hydroelectric turbine. This information helped the client to identify several significant limitations to the original site location and to a better understanding of the surrounding environment.
