Survey Technician Locations: Palmer

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Requisition, set up and configure data collection instruments required for survey

  • Operate collection instruments to accumulate required data

  • Record survey measurements and descriptive data using notes, drawings, sketches, and inked tracings

  • Perform calculations to determine earth curvature corrections, atmospheric impacts or measurements, traverse closures, adjustments, and tides

  • Prepare data, charts, plots, maps, records, and documents related to land or hydrographic surveys

  • Verify, compile, process and prepare data to delineated electronic drawing format as specified by Project Manager or contract requirements

  • Assist senior technicians with the coordination of findings with the work of processing personnel, clients, and others connected to survey projects

  • Verify survey data to include checking computations

  • Return survey equipment to shop, tagging any damaged or malfunctioning equipment so that it may be serviced

  • Assist with the review of project contracts to ensure that survey data and results are presented in compliance with contract requirements

  • Assist with the assembly of cartographic deliverables

  • Assist with performing geographic and spatial analyses

  • Assist with the mobilizing and demobilizing boats in the field


Job Specifications:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of conventional land survey and GPS procedures and equipment

  • Basic knowledge of the fundamentals of hydrographic surveying. Specific knowledge areas may include DGPS, RTK, tides and tide zoning, cartography, sound velocity, multibeam echosounder, single beam echosounder operation, sidescan collection and interpretation, and determination and application of vessel configuration offsets

  • Background in mathematics to include arithmetic, algebra, and geometry as related to surveying

  • Demonstrated commitment to safety principles and protocols

  • Working knowledge of personal computers, telephone systems, fax machine, copier, scanner and printers

  • Physically able to lift up to 50 lbs.

  • Physically able to walk and stand for most of the day

  • Working knowledge of applicable software packages to include AutoCad, Microsoft Word and Excel, Trimble Geomatics Office, and Hypack

  • Basic knowledge of hydrographic data analytical tools including Caris, Hypack and QINSy

  • Familiarity with state mapping requirements


Required Background and Experience:

  • Minimum of one year experience combined with completed relevant degree, 3 years of work experience, or equivalent combination of work experience and education

  • LSIT or FLS (either completed, in progress or planned)

  • Candidate must be legally eligible and insurable to drive to regular assignments

  • AS/AA or BS/BA in Geomatics, Cartography, Geography, Natural Sciences, Engineering, or other relevant discipline preferred


Tools and Equipment Used:

  • Conventional optical land survey equipment to include levels, theodolite, TotalStation data collector, Electronic Distance Measuring Instrument (EDMI)

  • GPS equipment to include static, DGPS, and Real time Kinematic, telemetry systems, data collectors, and GPS power systems

  • Single beam echosounder, multi beam sonar, and side scan sonar,

  • Standard office equipment including personal computer, telephone system, fax machine, copier, 10 key calculator and printers

  • Various hand and power tools


Certificated and Licenses Required:

  • Valid Driver's license

  • LSIT (FLS) (in progress or planned)

  • Ability to procure a passport


Working Conditions:
Work is performed in a combination of an office and a field environment. Field work is performed outdoors and may take place in inclement weather and extreme temperatures. Hydrographic survey work requires working at sea for extended periods of time and may require living and working in close, cramped quarters. Both field and office work requires occasional heavy lifting of survey equipment (up to 50 pounds). Responsibilities may require an adjusted work schedule, long days, and evening/weekend hours in order to meet deadlines. Extensive travel is required.
